Fathima (name changed), a resident of Modi Road at Devarajeevana Halli, could not resist the temptation of a chocolate offered to her by a stranger, which resulted in a horrific tragedy for the family.
New Year couldn't have begun on a worse possible note for little Fathima and her family.
All of seven, Fathima (name changed), a resident of Modi Road at Devarajeevana Halli, could not resist the temptation of a chocolate offered to her by a stranger, which resulted in a horrific tragedy for the family.
Like many children in the locality, Fathima was busy watching a dance programme organised as part of the New Year celebrations.
During the programme, a stranger offered her a chocolate. Being a little girl, Fathima, tempted by the chocolate, followed the stranger without any suspicion.
After one-and-half hours, Fathima was brought to her home by two Tamil-speaking people. Her grandmother was shocked to discover that Fathima had been sexually assaulted, when the girl complained of pain. "It was almost 2 am when she was brought home. I was in a dilemma and had no idea what to do when she complained of pain. I took her to a nearby private clinic in the morning,'' she said.
Fathima's relatives were stunned when the doctor advised them to take Fathima to a government hospital for treatment. They rushed to Devara Jeevana Halli Police Station but were made to wait for more than two hours to register the complaint.
Frustrated, they finally had to seek Dalit and Minorities Sene members' help. "We had to wait more than one-and-half hours at the police station. Police were reluctant to register the case,'' said Vijaya Lakshmi, president, Bangalore North Women's Wing, Dalit and Minorities Sene.
According to relatives of the victim, police inspector S Parashivamurthy came to the police station at 1.30pm and made arrangements to send the victim to Dr BR Ambedkar Medical Hospital at 2pm. "I wanted the police commissioner to suspend the police inspector for dereliction of duty. We will stage a protest in front of Dr BR Ambedkar statue if the police commissioner fails to suspend the police inspector,'' said AJ Khan, state working president, Dalit and Minorities Sene.
Meanwhile, TG Krishna Bhat, deputy commissioner of police, Bangalore East, had to rush to DJ Halli Police Station to calm down agitating members of Dalit and Minorities Sene. Some members complained that Bhat, too, did not respond to their phone calls. "I had to switch off my phone since I was with additional chief metropolitan magistrate,'' said Bhat.
